In the second quarter of 2020, thanks to the community’s support, Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation granted your not-for-profit hospitals nearly $3 million in support of 11 programs and 10 capital projects. Please refer to the following descriptions highlighting key grants supported in the second quarter of this year:

da Vinci XI Surgical System for Morton Plant North Bay Hospital
Robotically-assisted surgery, compared to open surgeries, are minimally invasive and can provide the patient with the added benefits of less blood loss, minimal scarring, less trauma to the body, shorter length of stay and lowering the risk of infection, resulting in faster recovery, fewer complications and overall improved outcomes. The system allows surgeons better visualization, full use of their wrists, and better body ergonomics as they are generally sitting rather than standing. The system will be used at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital for minimally invasive surgical procedures in the areas of gynecology, oncology, urology, bariatrics and general surgery.

Mammography 3D Selenia Performance System at Mease Dunedin Hospital
Mease Dunedin Hospital had a critical need to replace its outdated 2D mammography system. In fact, the hospital was in jeopardy of shutting down the service line without Foundation capital support of this technology. 3D tomography capability has been determined from the BayCare Breast Collaborative as standard of care for mammography imaging. This system will dramatically improve image resolution and features the world's first and only tomosynthesis-guided biopsy.

LUCAS Chest Compression Systems
After participating in a behind-the-scenes “scrubs tour” of one of our hospitals, we had a donor make a gift to fund six LUCAS chest compression devices for our hospitals’ Emergency Departments and Critical Care Units. The LUCAS device delivers guidelines-consistent chest compressions independent on what surface the patient lies upon, the height of the bed or the rescuer's physical strength.

Uber Transportation Assistance for Patients in Need
Due to the pandemic surrounding COVID-19, our hospitals have suspended all volunteer services, including the van transportation program, CareLift. Many patients have chemotherapy and radiation, and due to the suspension of CareLift, this may cause them to skip their appointment due to lack of transportation. This grant provides continued transportation assistance through Uber rides for patients needing rides monthly for their critical care needs.

Mammography Voucher Program
Community breast health services program serving uninsured and low-income women with access to clinical breast exams, screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasound, MRIs, fine needle aspirations, image‐guided and surgical biopsies, surgical consultations, and treatment.

Tru-D SmartUVC Robots for our Hospitals
Tru-D is a portable UV disinfection system that delivers an automated, measured dose of UVC light to help kill deadly pathogens and common health care-associated infection culprits throughout a room. Compensating for size, shape, geometry and contents, Tru-D takes the appropriate time necessary to disinfect every room, eliminating human error in the disinfection process.
